Tutorial Tuesday - Lego Topiary

Afternoon and welcome to Tutorial Tuesday. The rest of this month will be Tutorials based around the makes and decor I created for the Lego V Mega Bloks Party.

Today we have the Lego Topiary, which makes a fun addition to the party table...

You will need:

A 10cms Polystyrene ball,
A 10 inch piece of wooden dowel,
Hot Glue and Gun
Paint,
Some florists foam,
Lego Pieces, (I actually used the cheaper version as I couldn't get my boy to part with the real thing),
Some Mega Bloks,
Piece of square cardboard.

Step 1:

Paint your wooden dowel in the colour of your choice. I used a nice bright yellow...

...and leave to dry.

Step 2:

Heat up your glue gun. Start to glue the 'Lego' pieces onto the polystyrene ball. Glue as tightly together as you can, so little or no white shows through. You'll need different size blocks so you can fit them in and give a nice random look...

Keep going until the ball is completely covered, (make sure you leave a little space at the bottom to insert your dowel.)

Step 3:

Push your dry, painted dowel into the space at the bottom of the Lego ball so it goes a nice way in, then remove it. Into that hole insert a nice big blob of hot glue. Push your dowel firmly back into the gluey hole and hold until set...

You can then fill in any little white spaces with small 'Lego' pieces.

Step 4:

Build a square structure with the Mega Bloks, but leave a space in the centre...

...cut a piece of florists foam to fit the centre of the Mega Blok 'pot'...

Step 5:

Insert the dowel all the way into the foam, to make sure it is nice and stable, (you can glue the dowel into the foam, if you wish)...

...cover the top of the foam with more 'Lego' pieces...

Step 6:

Cut a piece of strong cardboard to fit the base of the Mega Blok 'pot'...

Put some blobs of hot glue into the centre of the cardboard square...

Stick this to the bottom of the 'pot' but make sure the glue is only sticking to the florist's foam, (You want to be able to reuse the Mega Bloks again.)

This cardboard will give your topiary a nice sturdy base.

Done!

Voilà a fun, colourful Lego & Mega Blok Topiary!

You can make this to match any theme - think Gumballs for a Sweet-Themed Party or Pom Pom's for a Circus Party or how about a Pretty Fake-Flower one for a Fairy Garden party. The possibilities are endless!

Hope you enjoyed that colourful Tute and have fun crafting whatever you make!

Take care!

xx
